The Virgen del Carmen, patron of fishermen, is honoured in Tenerife’s harbour towns every summer with processions that take her image out to sea. The biggest is in Puerto de la Cruz, where the Fiestas de Julio run all month and peak with the embarkation of the Virgen del Carmen and San Telmo in mid-July — in 2026, on Tuesday 14 July, with more than 70,000 people expected.
Puerto de la Cruz: Fiestas de Julio
Puerto de la Cruz’s “Grandes Fiestas de Julio” fill the whole of July with concerts, sports, traditional events and parties. The main day follows a set pattern:
- Morning: crowds gather early; a Mass is held at the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia.
- Procession: the images of the Virgen del Carmen and San Telmo are carried through the streets to the fishing pier.
- Embarkation: fishermen lift the images aboard a traditional boat, which sails along the coast escorted by decorated boats, blessing the sea.
- Return and fireworks: the images return in a land procession, and the day ends with fireworks over the bay.
The harbour and seafront get extremely crowded; find a spot early on the sea wall or around Plaza del Charco.
Other Carmen fiestas
Fishing communities around Tenerife hold their own Fiestas del Carmen, typically in July (her feast day is 16 July) but sometimes later in the summer. Puerto de Santiago (near Los Gigantes), San Andrés (Santa Cruz) and Los Realejos are among the places with Carmen celebrations, some with sea processions. Dates are set locally each year.
Tips
- Bring sun protection — it’s a long day outdoors in July.
- Buses into Puerto de la Cruz are busy; travel early.
- Stay on for the evening: bars around Plaza del Charco are lively. See Puerto de la Cruz nightlife.
