New Year's Eve in Tenerife 2026: Where to Celebrate

Ce guide n'est pas encore disponible en français ; il s'affiche donc en anglais.

New Year’s Eve in Tenerife is celebrated with free open-air parties in the main town squares, fireworks at midnight, the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes on the chimes, and packed bars and hotel galas in the southern resorts. Tenerife is on UK time, so midnight here is midnight in London — an hour after mainland Spain.

Where to celebrate

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The capital holds the island’s biggest public celebration, with the midnight chimes in Plaza de España by the harbour, followed by music and fireworks. Spanish national TV has broadcast the chimes from Santa Cruz in the past.

Los Cristianos (Arona)

Los Cristianos usually holds a large free party around the cultural centre and Plaza del Pescador, with orchestras and DJs from about 10pm until the early hours, and fireworks at midnight.

Adeje and Costa Adeje

Adeje town hosts a street party in its main square, and Costa Adeje’s bars, beach clubs and hotels hold ticketed parties and gala dinners. The seafront from Playa del Duque to Puerto Colón is a good place to watch fireworks.

Playa de las Américas

The busiest night out on the island. Bars in Veronicas and Starco and around the Golden Mile are packed, often with tribute acts and DJs, and many sell tickets or set a minimum spend. See our Playa de las Américas nightlife guide.

Los Gigantes, El Médano and other towns

Los Gigantes (Santiago del Teide) and El Médano have their own plaza parties with local bands and DJs, and smaller towns across the island do the same. These are friendlier and more local in feel.

Puerto de la Cruz

In the north, Puerto de la Cruz celebrates around Plaza del Charco and the harbour, and has its own New Year’s Eve traditions as part of its “city of Christmas” programme.

Public party line-ups are published by each town hall in December, so check the programme closer to the date. Shows already listed for 31 December appear below.

The 12 grapes

At midnight, Spaniards eat a grape on each of the 12 chimes (“las campanadas”) for luck in every month of the year. Peeled, seedless grapes in small tins are sold in supermarkets, and public parties often hand out grapes and party bags (cotillón). Wearing red underwear for luck is another tradition.

Hotel galas and ticketed parties

Many hotels hold New Year’s Eve gala dinners with live music, and the larger bars and clubs sell tickets for the night. Prices vary widely; book early, as the most popular events sell out. Check what’s included (dinner, drinks, grapes, cava at midnight).

Getting home

Taxis are in very high demand after midnight, and queues can be long. Agree a pick-up in advance if you can, stay within walking distance of your hotel, or choose a party in your own resort. Some councils have run extra buses on the night. See our taxis guide.

New Year’s Day

1 January is a public holiday: shops are shut and buses run a reduced service, but resort bars and restaurants open, many with hangover breakfasts and afternoon live music. Then comes Three Kings on 5–6 January.

Questions fréquentes

Where is the best place to spend New Year's Eve in Tenerife?

For a big free street party, Santa Cruz's Plaza de España and the town squares of Los Cristianos, Adeje and Los Gigantes are the main options. For a night out with British and Irish bars, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje are busiest, and many bars and hotels hold ticketed parties.

Are there fireworks in Tenerife on New Year's Eve?

Yes. Fireworks go off at midnight in many towns and resorts, including Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos, and hotels along the south coast often add their own displays. Beaches and seafront promenades are good places to watch.

Yes. New Year's Day is a public holiday. Most shops are closed and buses run a reduced service, but resort bars and restaurants open, often later in the day.
