Corpus Christi in La Orotava is one of the most beautiful events in the Canary Islands. The old town’s streets are covered with carpets of flower petals, and the square in front of the town hall holds a giant tapestry made of volcanic sands from Mount Teide. With Corpus Christi on 27 May 2027, La Orotava’s main carpet day should fall about a week later, in early June.
When to go
| Date | |
|---|---|
| Corpus Christi 2027 | Thursday 27 May |
| La Orotava carpets 2026 (for reference) | Thursday 4 June |
| La Orotava carpets 2027 | Expected early June (the infraoctava, a week after Corpus) — check the town’s programme |
The carpets are made overnight and in the early morning, so the best time to see them is the morning of the main day, before the procession walks over them.
What you’ll see
- The flower carpets: streets in the historic centre covered with designs made from petals, heather and seeds.
- The magno tapiz: the enormous tapestry in Plaza del Ayuntamiento, made entirely from natural, unpainted volcanic sands and earths of different colours from the Teide National Park. It’s a tradition that goes back to the 19th century.
- The procession: in the afternoon, the Corpus procession passes over the carpets.
La Orotava’s Corpus kicks off the town’s patron saint fiestas, which include a Romería (pilgrimage) and a traditional Baile de Magos dance in the days that follow.
La Laguna
La Laguna also celebrates Corpus Christi around the Corpus date, with carpets and altars in its World Heritage centre — worth combining with a day in the old town.
Tips
- Go early: crowds build quickly and the town’s steep streets get packed.
- Park outside the centre or take a bus or taxi — streets close.
- Don’t step on the carpets.
- From the south, it’s about an hour by car; see day trips from Tenerife’s resorts.
Domande frequenti
When is Corpus Christi in La Orotava in 2027?
Corpus Christi falls on Thursday 27 May 2027. La Orotava's main carpet day is traditionally a week later, at the 'infraoctava' — in 2026 it was on Thursday 4 June. That suggests early June 2027, but check the town's programme when it's published.
What are the La Orotava carpets made of?
The street carpets are made of flower petals, and the giant tapestry in Plaza del Ayuntamiento is made from naturally coloured volcanic sands and earth gathered in the Teide National Park. Teams spend weeks preparing them.
How long do the carpets last?
Only a day. They are made in the early hours, admired during the day, and the procession walks over them in the afternoon or evening.
Is there Corpus Christi in La Laguna too?
Yes. La Laguna holds its own Corpus Christi procession around the Corpus Christi date, with carpets and altars in the historic centre.
