About Patio de los Cipreses del Exconvento de San Agustín
The Patio de los Cipreses is the second cloister of the former Augustinian convent on Calle San Agustín, one of the most beautiful streets in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The convent closed in 1821 and the building became a university. Since 1846 it has housed the island's historic secondary school, today the IES Canarias Cabrera Pinto. Its main cloister was known as the Patio de los Naranjos, and the cypress patio is the quieter second courtyard.
The atmospheric open-air courtyard is used as a venue for concerts and cultural events, including performances during the La Laguna Early Music Festival, and the building's exhibition rooms host free art shows. Next door are the remains of the San Agustín church, completed in 1765 and gutted by fire in 1964, which still has its Baroque doorway.
Calle San Agustín runs through the heart of the UNESCO-listed old town, lined with historic mansions such as the Palacio de Lercaro, so arrive early and take a stroll before the performance begins.
